Persona 3 Reload released at the start of February 2024, following the trend of recent Sega/Atlus titles by also coming to Game Pass on day one. It had been a while since I played through Persona 3 (or more specifically, Persona 3 Portable), so I was down to give this latest version of the game a try.
Most of the story beats are still the same in Persona 3 Reload, as you take your blue haired protagonist through both their life at school, and their shadow hunting activities in the mysterious “Dark Hour”. The combination of life sim-style stat raising and more typical RPG dungeon crawling was a relatively novel concept when Persona 3 originally released — especially in the west — and it’s something that hasn’t really been improved upon since outside of later Persona entries.
What makes this latest version of Persona 3 a little odd is that it’s not a definitive release. While some changes from other versions make it over (fully controllable party members and being able to max your bonds with female characters without dating them), but content like The Answer from FES and a female protagonist from Portable do not.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that Persona 3 Reload also includes some content that’s completely new. A lot of this revolves around the main cast of characters, giving them new events in the dorm room. This is a welcome addition, especially for the male characters — for whatever reason, they didn’t have any social links outside of playing as the female protagonist in Persona 3 Portable — and makes the group feel like an actual team.
Dungeon crawling in Tartarus, the main dungeon of the game, is still relatively familiar. The game makes use of a camera angle closer to Persona 5, giving dungeons a greater sense of scale compared to the more top-down version used in the original. Each character can also make use of “Theurgy” abilities by filling a metre, letting you deal out big damage without expending SP.
For people that have played any version of Persona 3 recently (the ports of Persona 3 Portable only came out last year), then I wouldn’t say that you should rush to play Persona 3 Reload. But it’s a great way to revisit a classic RPG, even if I still think that the female protagonist should have been included.
