When Atomic Heart by Russian studio Mundfish which is located in Cyprus was unveiled in May 2018, it took many players by surprise. The post-apocalyptic Eastern Bloc aesthetic set in an alternative USSR and the countless absurd looking and behaving robots breathed fresh air into the dusty FPS genre. Even though the game will only be released tomorrow for current- and last-gen systems as well as Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, we were already able to play Atomic Heart for two hours and you can find the captured video below.
It’s the year 1955 and we’re in Facility 3826, a fictional top-secret military base in the USSR of an alternative timeline in which the Soviet Union defeated the Nazis and scientist Dimitry Sechenov developed the special substance Polymer and the neural network Kollectiv. Utilising a new device he created a way for humans to control robots with their mind. We’re Major P-3, a elite soldier of the secrent intelligence, and witness hell break lose in the utopie as it falls apart at the seams.
While the initial sequence has us exploring a Soviet city in the skies kind of like in Bioshock Infinite, we’re literally brought down to earth quickly, repelling waves of robots with our trusty axe, shot gun and pistol. There’s a light and heavy attack for the axe, we can hack into security cameras and stall robots with an EMP burst. The environments are very detailed and in every corner we find new audio logs, e-mails and propaganda leaflets. Exploring is usually followed by a scripted action sequence you may know from the trailers to get to the next area. Sneaking hasn’t really worked for us since the robots just noticed us every time. During the course of the game it’s expected to open up and let us use up to 94 skills. The English voice over is very well done and the brash comments of the protagonist remind us of “B.J.” Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein: The New Order. During the initial hours we listen to a mix of Mick Gordon’s score (Doom (2016), Doom Eternal) and Russian pop music.
Compared to the first gameplay trailer from 2019 the visual fidelity could be much improved. Using a Ryzen 5 3600, Radeon RX 5700 XT and 16 GB RAM we can play Atomic Heart in 40 to 70 fps in 1440p with Ultra details. If you use a Nividia card, you can make use of DLSS, AMD’s FSR doesn’t seem to be officially supported.
Our initial impression of Atomic Heart is positive, though we still have to actually experience the open-world aspect and unlock said skill system.
If you grew up playing challenging sidescrolling adventures, then Infernax is definitely a game you want to check out. Developed by Berzerk Studio, it’s a big homage to games like Castlevania II Simon’s Quest and Zelda II, as it’s a brrutal adventure with a lot of references. Only, there’s blood. Lots of blood. And some very graphic images, even if the whole game switches between 8-bit style gameplay and 16-bit style cutscenes.
As you progress through the game, defeating all the big demons you can find, you’ll have to make some important choices, or decide whether to accept or not several quests. Your decisions will go to impact whatever ending you may get, adding as a bonus even “Ultimate” Good and Evil endings if you do everything right (or wrong). If you decide to go out of your way to be a jerk, you may even get a whole different weapon and set of magic spells, but I won’t say anymore to let you find out for yourselves. You can even get to fight different bosses and enemies, or access whole new quests, which surprised me very positively.
These choices help make Infernax feel fresh at your every playthrough: there’s no new game plus, but you unlock several cheats which can help you progress more easily or even change how the game works, like playing with a whole new character. And with so many easter eggs to be found, you’ll be sure to play it for a long time. My only downside is that most of the bosses have been really easy to defeat, while the dungeons can get really tough in the last sections of the game.
Infernax has been one of the most underrated and pleasant surprises I ever found on Xbox Game Pass, and I heavily suggest you give it a try, even though it’s no longer included in the service. If the difficulty scares you, you can even set a more forgiving play mode or activate some cheats, so don’t be afraid to face this adventure!
