Dordogne (part of PC and Xbox Game Pass since June 16th, 2023) (Patrick)
Dordogne is a hand-drawn narrative adventure that puts us in the role of Mimi. After the death of her grandmother, a breakup and the loss of her job, she returns from the busy city to the idyll of her grandmother’s country house in the eponymous province of Dordogne in south-western France. The game is told on two different time levels in the years 1982 (Mimi is 10) and 2004 (32). As she explores the house in gray colors and argues with her parents via text messages, we keep coming back to Mimi’s childhood memories rendered in bright colors. We experience how she meets her best friend, goes on a kayak tour, plants vegetables with her grandmother or has a picnic. In terms of gameplay, Dordogne is very linear and simple and will rarely present you with any challenges. A few game elements feel a bit forced, like when we have to fish a key out of the mailbox, put it in the lock and turn it, and the platforming passages are a bit clunky.
Nice detail: The game visualises decisions in the form of keywords directly inside the game world. We are not aware of said decisions leading to different endings. In addition, at the end of each chapter you can fill a diary page with a photo you took yourself, sounds you recorded, a poem you composed yourself and a sticker you collected. Unlike in Season: A Letter to the Future, for example, it is only possible to snap a photo or create a sound recording at a few specified points in the game world.
The gripping atmosphere, which is created by the superb voice acting, the fantastic soundtrack and last but not least by the beautiful visuals presented in watercolors, and the touching story with an emotional and somewhat abrupt end with a bittersweet aftertaste were reason enough for us to keep being engaged for the duration of three hours, despite the game’s shortcomings in terms of gameplay. Anyone looking for a heartbreaking game to play on a Sunday afternoon should check out Dordogne.
Chicory (part of PC and Xbox Game Pass since May 30th, 2023 and part of PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium since September 20th, 2022) (Patrick)
Everything revolves around colors in Chicory too: Chicory is the bearer of a magic brush that is supposed to breathe fresh life into the picnic world again. However, since chicory is unable to fill the world with color due to the high pressure of this office, this is your task from now on. Your own character is named after your favorite food or alternatively pizza. In Chicory you explore the different areas of the picnic world – such as Soup Forest, Bug Kingdom and Gulp Swamp – meet a colorful ensemble of anthropomorphic animals, listen to the relaxing soundtrack, paint the world and fight against the spreading rot in short boss fights.
Each area has its own color palette. With this you can color every detail of the game world, but you don’t have to. In order to progress, however, you have to fill certain levels with color to make them accessible or to solve smaller environmental puzzles. Aside from the main missions, which culminate in bullet hell-style boss fights in rot-infested trees, you can find numerous gifts hidden in the world, such as new clothing items or brush styles. This results in a playing time of up to 20 hours. As the game progresses, you can also develop your own brush style and color palette and plaster the world with them if you wish. In addition, you acquire other skills such as jumping or swimming up waterfalls and can thus reach new areas, a fast travel function is fortunately also available in the big game world.
Chicory is a lovable puzzle adventure that, despite its cute looks, treats serious topics such as depression and anxiety with dignity and at the same time brings a smile to your face every time you finished painting another part of the beautiful game world. If you like games like Okami or The Unfinished Swan, you should give Chicory a chance.
We captured the screenshots of Dordogne and Chicory on PC. The publisher provided us a Steam code for Chicory, Xbox and PlayStation provided us with access to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PlayStation Plus Premium.
